Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow this year on Feb. 2 in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, predicting we will have an early spring.
This is a very rare occurrence as an early winter has only been predicted 20 times prior to this Groundhog Day, making this only the 21st time since 1887 that Punxsutawney Phil has not seen his shadow. He has seen his shadow 107 times since 1887.
According to the original tradition of 1887, when Phil sees his shadow, it signifies that there will be six more weeks until spring. If he doesn’t see his shadow, that signifies that there will be only four weeks until spring.
Punxsutawney Phil announces his prediction the same way every year. It’s celebrated by people showing up to the grounds starting at 2 a.m. It continues with a talent show, followed up by a banquet, performances, and then onlookers and chant “Phil, Phil, Phil!” while they wait for the groundhog to appear.
