The RCMUN Conference, the first conference of its kind to be held in RCMS, was hosted on June 1 to let members of the club boost their public speaking and collaboration skills.
To execute the conference, each MUN member put in preparation. Every participant of MUN was given a position to argue for. A fundraiser was held to raise money for folders, pens, food, and gavels. They took time to write background guides and dossiers for delegates to use.
With all the preparation, Tejesh Vaddi, a seventh-grader in the Champions team, believes they did well.
“We did really well for our first conference, and I hope we can continue,” Tejesh said.
Model UN (MUN) was first held at the University of Oxford in November 1921. It was created to educate the students of the United Nations on international political issues. They hope this will allow the students to be more effective citizens.
“I think Model UN is a great club to be a part of,” said Annie Wang, an eighth-grader on the Discovery team.
During the conference, a total of five different committees were there. Different committees talked about different topics ranging from Stranger Things to Marvel. Each member of MUN worked to represent a country, organization, or person and worked with others in their committee to solve a conflict.
Members of MUN believed that the conference went well compared to other middle school MUN conferences. Both the audience and speakers found the event fun, and that more events like these will be held.
Awards were given out to the MUN members such as “Verbal,” which was fourth place, “Honorable,” which was third place, “Outstanding,” which was second place, and “Gavel,” which was first place.
“I think this conference should’ve been done long ago,” said Arohi Vamshi, a seventh-grader on the Legacy team.
Members of MUN have benefited from this organization. It helped boost members’ public speaking skills. People in MUN agree that the club helped create close friendships with others. Some members even hope to join this same club once they enter high school. They also encourage students in RCMS to try out for MUN next year.
“You should definitely try to join because it will really benefit you as a public speaker,” said Arohi Vamshi, a seventh-grader in the Legacy team.
