On Sept. 20, the Carson debate team finalized its team members and announced that it will hold its first meeting on September 23.
The Debate Club is competitive and will participate in eight tournaments (six being open) against other schools in Fairfax County. The final round of the tournaments will take place in Chicago, IL.
In order for students to join the club, everyone must go through three rounds of tryouts. The first round is to build an essay on why debate is important. The second round is to make a debate case on “The United States should substantially expand its surveillance infrastructure along its Southern Border.” Additionally, students have to make a video of themselves reading the script. Lastly, students were interviewed by the sponsor for the team.
This year, the club will be participating in the public forum debate category, as confirmed by the Washington Arlington Catholic Forensic Team. In a public forum debate, one team supports the pro side while the other argues for the con side.
