Principal Donald Washington, our new principal here at Carson, is excited to learn about all the students and teachers here.
“The people always make the school,” he said.
Mr. Washington went to JMU. He loves sports. He also has a daughter that plays basketball.
Mr. Washington used to be the principal at ForestVille Elementary School. He said he came to Carson because his daughter also came to Carson and he wanted a change in schools.
Mr. Washington said his short-term goals are just learning more about the school and learning more about the staff. He said his long term goals are to make sure kids are socially and emotionally prepared for high school.
Students and staff are both excited and curious to see what Mr. Washington will be doing at Carson.
Mrs. Kelly Cosgrove, assistant principal, said, “Everybody is curious to see how things are going to run under the new principal.”
Counselor Beth Schires said Mr. Washington has done a great job after the change of schools and that he has a calm presence.
Mrs. Schires said, “He’s a very likable guy.”
“Each principal s the boss of the school, and they get to establish … their own rules,” she added. “And the transition from Mr. Stokes to Mr. Washington has been very smooth.”
Mrs. Cosgrove agreed with Mrs. Schires.
“There may be different expectations and it’s a big change from his previous job, but Mr. Washington has done a good job with it,” said Mrs. Cosgrove.
She says that people are both excited and curious to see what Mr. Washington does.
“He has done a lot of observing and hasn’t really changed any rules and expectations,” says Mrs. Cosgrove.
Mrs. Cosgrove and Mrs. Schires recalled when all of the admins dressed up as middle-schoolers on Halloween. Mrs. Cosgrove said he looked like a middle schooler with his hoodie and hood up, wearing athletic shorts, and dabbing the students up. Mrs. Cosgrove said that it was fun to see him participating.
Mrs. Schires was walking up the stairs and saw Mr. Washington, and she asked him what he was doing out of class.
“Just going to class ma’am,” Mr. Washington replied.
