On Oct. 27, after a 1.4% chance of winning the game, Jayden Daniels, quarterback for the Washington Commanders, threw a hail mary to wide receiver Noah Brown, securing an 18-15 win for the Washington Commanders over the Chicago Bears.
RCMS students and staff were left in disbelief as they watched history in the making— including Elias Cheung Nguyen, 12, of the Dream Team.
“I was screaming my head off,” he said. “Me and my dad were going crazy, and my mom got annoyed because we were being loud.”
After the ball was snapped at the 48-yard line with two seconds left on the clock, Daniels dodged the Bears’ defense before throwing the 52-yard hail mary to the end zone. The ball was tipped into the air by the Bears’ cornerback Tyrique Stevenson and fell into Noah Brown’s waiting arms.
“I thought they would lose,” said Mrs. Ji Dalkin, a math teacher on the Dream team. “It was close, and there wasn’t enough time for them to come back.”
After the play, the Commanders’ sideline is shown running onto the field, yelling and celebrating the huge win. This includes Dan Quinn, 54, and Head Coach for the Commanders. After the game, he expressed to the media how impressed he was by the play, and how it was “wild” and “so much fun.”
The Commanders team was originally established in 1932 as the ‘Boston Braves’ by Preston Marshall. In 1937, they relocated to Washington, and changed their name to the Washington Redskins, which was their name until 2020, when they changed it to the Commanders.
On Dec. 1, the Commanders beat the Tennessee Titans 42-19. They will next make an appearance in New Orleans against the Saints, on Dec. 15, at 1 pm.
“Yeah, they’re gonna make the playoffs!” says Aarush Atmakuri, 12, of the Trailblazers team.
