Students and teachers at Rachel Carson are thrilled about the prior snow days and are looking forward for more to come.
Gage Mastroianni, 13, on the Voyagers team, always appreciates days off of school.
“I am excited for snow days because I hate school,” he said.
Since it snowed in late November and early January, many speculations swirled around the possibility of more snow combined with many mixed reactions. Some people expected no snow due to global warming while others expected a ton of snow.
Ms. Daniela Goldstein, an eighth-grade Civics teacher on the Voyagers team, was caught by surprise by the unexpected flurry.
“I was surprised when it snowed in late November, but students were staring out the window, shocked,” she said.
Mr. Greg Robinson, a seventh-grade science teacher on the Majestics Team wasn’t caught off guard during the unique event.
“I was not surprised because it snowed on Thanksgiving 2018 so it is not that crazy,” he said.
Because of the early snow, students and teachers are turning their attention to the later months.
“I think we will get 2-3 more snow days (or ice days), and maybe a few more 2-hour delays, Winter is not done with us yet!” Mr. Robinson said.
Ms. Goldstein had a similar opinion, predicting more snow in the near future.
“I predict one more snowstorm for a few inches,” she said.
Gage thinks that global warming will play a factor in the upcoming weather.
“I think this winter will be warm because of global warming,” he said. “I don’t think there will be snow because usually February is warmer than December and January.”
Aarush, 12, on the trailblazers team also thinks global warming will have an effect.
“I think there will be next to no snow because of global warming,” he said.
Snow Day Memories and Plans
Winter is here, and along with it comes warm memories and fun activities to do in the snow, even for those who don’t have any gear. Anyone right now can go outside and have fun in the snow, as long as you have imagination.
Ms. Goldstein says, “As a kid in 1996 there was a big blizzard, and we made an igloo so big one of us could fit inside of it.”
Gage also enjoys making snow structures on fun wintery days.
Gage said, “When there was this year that a snow truck came and there was a giant pile of snow leftover and me and my friends built a snow fort inside.”
When talking about the current day it’s safe to say that everyone can be excited for snow days off because they can relax.
Mr. Robinson said, “If we get snow days I would just sleep in and play in the snow with my dog.”
Aarush also takes advantage of the rare occurrence by playing in the frosty snow.
“We have a good neighborhood so I’ll probably build a snow fort again with my friend,” he said.
