The RCMS debate team triumphed at the Washington debate tournament on Feb. 15 by beating local high schoolers.
Allegra Berger and Sophia Kim, two eighth-graders, were both competing at the Washington debate competition at Washington Liberty High School in Arlington. Both of them were debating the topic: Should the U.S. enter the Roman Statute of the International Criminal Court? They competed against other local teams, including multiple high school teams.
Allegra and Sophia competed at the Junior Varsity level, the second highest level in high school debate, and won three out of four rounds. They weren’t able to place, but they were able to beat three high school teams.
The RCMS debate team competes in the Washington Forensic League and will be competing in the Metro Finals on March 14.
Their coach, Ms. Adams said, “Many debate coaches came to me afterward and told me that it was remarkable that they were able to compete at this level. They said they couldn’t wait for them to come to high school. ”
