“I don’t think this year’s met gala did as well as the last because it was less popular,” said Azerin Azarsina, a seventh-grader on the Champions team.
The 2025 Met Gala was in full swing on May 5 in The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute on The Met Fifth Ave. The theme was less popular among students and teachers.
Ms. Calandra Couch, an art teacher in B pod is okay with the theme.
“I like that it alters between topics,” she said.
Azerin disagrees.
She said, “I think the theme could have been better.”
This year’s theme was Superfine: Tailoring Black Style. It was partially inspired by Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.
Based on this theme, celebrities wore suit-like outfits, dark and light color schemes, and dark patterns. Some celebrities who did this are: A$AP Rocky, Teyana Taylor, Tyla, Raúl Ávila, and Arthur Jafa.
Azerin liked Jennie, a member of a K-pop group called Blackpink’s, outfit.
She said, “I liked how it was all black, her hat, and the white rose.”
Ms. Couch said she liked Janelle Monae’s outfit.
“I think it’s so unique and the contrast in the patterns caught my eye,” she said.
The Met Gala is an invite-only charity event and a fundraiser for The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. This year, eight brands were involved in inviting attendees, these include: Louis Vuitton, Valentino, Marc Jacobs, Chanel, Thom Browne, Instagram, Africa Fashion International, and Condé Nast.
The met gala was co-chaired by Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, and Anna Wintour. LeBron James will serve as the honorary chair.
This year The Met raised the most money it’s ever had in its 77-year history, totaling to $31 million. One ticket to attend is $75,000, while a table can start at $350,000 which contains from 10-25 people.
Four-hundred fifty people attended this year’s Met Gala. Guests must be 18 or older to attend as of 2018. There is a no-phone policy for guests to keep the exclusivity of the event.
Theme
Alyssa Fraszer, on the Majestics team, thinks the theme could have been different.
“I think the theme should have been golden,” she said, “because it would suit the gala better.”
Ms. Heather Sullivan, a FACS teacher in C pod liked the previous theme, Garden of Time.
“I like nature,” she said. “Fabrics can be used in different ways to display nature.”
Food Menu
James Beard made the menu for the event.
For the first course, papaya piri-piri salad with a side of cucumbers doused in a Caribbean green-seasoning marinade was prepared for guests.
During dinner, guests were given Creole roasted chicken with lemon emulsion, rice and peas, and a fresh hot sauce with a side of BBQ collard greens with bacon, and cornbread with honey-curry butter.
As a final meal, for dessert guests were given Bodega Special Cosmic Brownie with a powdered sugar-donut mousse, as well as a golden cake with honey sweet cream and blistered gooseberry.
