Many people around the world are born on national holidays such as Halloween, Christmas, and Cinco De Mayo, which make birthdays extra special. Many people enjoy having their birthdays on special occasions but others feel like the holidays take over their birthdays.

“For me it would be unnatural to have a birthday that would not be on Halloween and where we wouldn’t go trick or treating,” said Nandita Cherukuri, seventh-grader on the Majestics team who has a birthday on Oct. 31, Halloween. On her last birthday, Nandita said her friends and cousins came over to celebrate her birthday. “I went Trick-or-Treating with my friends and later my cousins came over.”

About 220,000 babies worldwide are born every day according to didyouknow.org, and on Christmas only 172,000. That is an example of how few babies are born on holidays. This signifies how rare holiday birthdays are and how special they can be.

People often forget birthdays near a holiday, said Annabelle Drummond, seventh-grader on the Majestics team whose birthday is on Cinco de Mayo.

Annabelle decided to embrace her birthday and had a Cinco De Mayo themed birthday party when she turned 5.

Many students think that birthdays near holidays are the best because they feel closer to the holiday and to their birthday.

“Birthdays are unique and you get a special feeling, it’s still a magical time,” said Adhvik Vinodh, seventh-grader on the Trailblazers team who has a birthday on Christmas Eve. On his 10th birthday, to his surprise, his friends weren’t traveling anywhere so he enjoyed his birthday with his friends and family. Adhvik described it as “Super, awesome, and amazing!”

Some people with a holiday birthday also said they would find it weird not to have their birthday near a holiday due to the fact that they have had it like this for all their life. If they could have their birthday on any other day of the year, many said they would have it on a random day because to them its just a birthday.

“People who have their birthday around holidays should just embrace it,” said Mrs. Jennifer Masood, seventh-grade history teacher on the Legacy team with a birthday near Thanksgiving. Her husband had taken her out to dinner the day before Thanksgiving and they had a full course meal, she said, “I felt like a stuffed turkey!”
