RCMS goes to Broadway — or will it?

A field trip is back on the schedule for a select few of Carson’s theatre arts students, but it may still be affected by COVID-19.

The trip to New York City, an enrichment opportunity with only 50 slots available, was canceled due to health concerns before registration began in early January; it was later reapproved by FCPS, with sign-ups restarting on Feb. 17.

If it stays approved until students leave for New York on May 27, the $334 trip would include the opportunities to attend a Broadway acting workshop; see two Broadway musicals, “Hadestown” and “Come From Away”; shop in Times Square; and eat dinner at Hard Rock Cafe. With all of these events happening over the course of a day, the trip would last 21 hours in total, with students leaving for New York in charter buses at 5:30 a.m. and returning the next day at 2:30.

Since there is still a chance of the trip being canceled again before May 27, trip insurance is available for $18 to ensure students do not lose money.

In the past, seats for the trip have filled up in a matter of minutes after registration opened at 8 a.m., but despite the apparent enthusiasm Carson’s theater students have had about going on the trip, COVID outbreaks are a concern.
