Rachel Carson Middle School wiped out Langston Hughes on May 6, going undefeated in all five games at the RCMS gym during the annual basketball game.

Justice Pilling, a player on the seventh-grade boys team, said, “It was a good game but at the end of the day LHMS wouldn’t stand a chance.”

From 6 p.m till 6:35 p.m., the seventh-grade boys game took place in front of a loud home crowd. The final score was outstanding with a  41-15 win for the RCMS seventh-grade boys.

For the eighth-grade boys game, RCMS also came out with the win, the gymnasium very loud with fans from both schools cheering on their teams, majority of which were RCMS students.

The results of the girls’ games were outstanding as well, with LHMS standing no competition and losing both games.

According to the Women’s Sport Foundation,  girls have less access than boys to school sports.

“There is a lack of access,” the site states. “Girls have 1.3 million fewer opportunities to play high school sports than boys have.”

Many students are pleased that girls had an equal opportunity to the boys in RCMS basketball.

At the game, there were around 200 to 250 spectators, with the majority of them being RCMS students cheering on their school team.

Some people then begged the question, did RCMS win only because it was home court?

Farhan Ali, a seventh-grader on the Legacy team said, “I think that there was a little hometown advantage, but even if it was in LHMS, we would have still won 5-0.”

Before the other games took place, the RCMS and LHMS Special Olympics Basketball Teams faced off. Special Olympics basketball is “a global organization that changes lives by promoting understanding, acceptance and inclusion among people with and without intellectual disabilities,” according to the Special Olympics website.

They did very well and should be proud of putting themselves out there.

At the end of all five games, RCMS was overall, a team with more experienced players. A lot of people from RCMS play basketball.

“RCMS is a good basketball school,” Farhan said. “A lot of good players I know of are good and worthy of being on the team. Winning 5-0 shows our dominance over other schools.”
