RCMS students and staff are celebrating Black History month by learning all around the school.
Black history month was found by Carter G. Woodson in 1926
He was the founder of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. Black history month first started as a week and then turned into a whole month.
Monica McDonald,13, of the Voyagers team, said she celebrates Black history month by reading books about famous Africans Americans that changed peoples lives.
“I think people should celebrate it because it’s really important to many people,” she said.
She said she hopes the school does activities during Panther Time. She also wishes FCPS would give everyone more time off this month to visit historical places and to spend time with loved ones.
Diana Lainez Hernandez, 13, of the Discovery team, said people should write a small essay to write about the struggles that African Americans have gone through and should also go out and eat at Black-owned restaurants.
She also would like to see a parade, and she likes to give gifts to her friends to show that they care about Black history month.
Mr. Corman, of the Explorers team, said every African American should be recognized, not only well-known people like Martin Luther King Jr. and Lebron James.
“As a civics teacher who teaches more about the government, I would talk more about African American politics and senators,” he said.
He said RCTV will feature famous people people who changed lives and thinks that the teachers in RCMS should teach a little about this topic in their classrooms.
“Every subject can talk about African Americans like [English teachers] could talk about famous African American writers and [science teachers] could talk about African American scientists,” he said.
